Fun Easter Treats!

Rice Krispies Treat

With Easter on our doorstep, this is the perfect opportunity for parents and their children to spend time together. Apart from taking a trip away or going to the beach, there are also activities that can be done at home too. Baking is one such activity that is sure to be fun for all, because the best part about baking, is tasting the end product.

Executive Chef Shaun Dampies from Granny Mouse Country House & Spa is a family man who loves spending time in the kitchen making all kinds of sweet things to celebrate one of his favourite holidays.

“I find that Rice Krispy treats always go down well with the kids during Easter as they are tasty, colourful and fun,” he says.

For the ingredients you will need:

  • 6 Cups of Rice Krispies
  • 4 Cups of Marshmallows
  • 3 Tablespoons of butter
  • Chocolate
  • Hundreds and thousands
  • Chocolate vermicelli
  • Smarties
  • Astros
  • A baking pan
  • Sauce pan
  • Spatula or wooden spoon
  • Spray and cook
  • Grease-proof paper

Once all the ingredients are ready, here’s how to make these tasty treats:

First, prepare the baking pan. You can either spray the pan with cooking spray or use grease-proof paper to cover the baking pan – The benefit of using grease-proof paper is that you can easily lift your treats out of the tray and cut them with a pizza cutter.

Then, melt the butter or margarine in the large sauce pan using a low heat setting.

Next, add the marshmallows to the melted butter. Stir in until the marshmallows melt completely and then remove from the heat.

The next step is to pour in the Rice Krispies. Be sure to coat the Rice Krispies well by pouring the melted butter and marshmallow mix over them gently.

Pour the resulting mix out onto the prepared baking pan.

You can then mix in your toppings of choice (Astros, Smarties etc)

Then, press the mixture across the baking pan evenly. Do this either by pushing on the mixture with your hands through wax paper that you’ve laid over the top, or press down using a heavily buttered or oiled spatula.

Then once the mixture is evenly spread, leave it to cool.

“In my experience, Rice Krispies treats are always best and at their freshest on the day they’re made, so invite over the family and their kids or put them in a sandwich bag and drop off with family on the day!” Dampies adds.
